Out of the Fog

Hi Everyone!

Out of the Fog

Last weekend, I dropped off my original painting, Out of the Fog, at Spoke Art NYC for the opening of the group exhibition, Suggestivism: Resonance. I really wanted to attend the opening to see some old friends again, to meet some new ones, sign some copies of the new, beautiful Suggestivism book that was just released, and to eat a slice of NYC pizza which I miss so, so dearly. I accomplished all of those things and had an awesome time. The show itself is amazing and I highly recommend you to check it out if you're in the NYC area. You can find more info here: Suggestivism: Resonance

As much as I wanted to attend the opening for all the reasons listed above, the main reason I had to attend was because my painting was insanely late and wasn't dry enough to ship. Driving it from Pittsburgh to NYC to hand deliver it to the gallery was the only viable option to get it there in time for the show. I've been working on this painting for a few months so why did a 16"x20" oil painting take me so long to complete? I wrote a rather long-winded and brutally honest exposition into my creative and mental challenges over the past 8 months, but I'm going to spare you from that... also, after rereading what I had written the next day, I closed it without saving it. I think the importance was just writing it and knowing it for myself.

In brief, I've been mired in an existential quagmire and I've been trying to climb out of it for the better part of a year. This painting was a symbolic first step for me to climb out of the miasma of crushing self-doubt that had enveloped me and to get back on solid, creative ground again. It was an important piece for me to finish, and even though it took to the very last conceivable moment, I finished it and jumped that first mental hurdle. Relief. I wanted the piece to speak to my experience, so I came up with this painting and this title, Out of the Fog. I felt like I was in a deep, dense haze, but I wasn't standing idle in it. I was journeying deep into it in, hoping to find something grand and meaningful within. Even though this piece is pretty small, it feels enormous to me in many ways.

I'll be releasing limited edition prints of this piece on Friday July 20th in my Shop at 4:00 PM Eastern time. Here are the details on the print.

Patreon & The Multiversal Creature Guild

Guild-Logo-01.jpg

Hello Fellow Creatures

It’s been a while since any meaty art updates and this a going to be a big juicy slab of an update. (Note: This post will pair well with a spicy, bold red wine.) I’ve been super busy starting up a new endeavor that I hope will aid me in my quest into creative unknowns. What creative unknowns? That’s what I am going to find out. Confused? Me too. Pretty much always.

As you know, I’ve been making original works for galleries for over a decade and it’s a position I’m endlessly grateful for. It’s a privilege and an honor to hang my work up in these amazing galleries. I still have trouble figuring out how I actually pulled that off. Making a living by painting dragons, cats, trees, and the Cosmos is kind of a miracle. It’s been my obsession to keep pushing the bounds and scope of my work and I’m very proud of the evolution of that work. But…

(Yes, there’s a “but.”)

The “but” being that working as an exhibition artist was never intended to be the apex or end point of my creative ambitions. (Before I continue, I must stress that I will continue making original works for shows. I just intend to offset my creative time into other areas.) Branching out into other creative fields has been long time desire for me. Unfortunately, the all-consuming nature of my current work state has put all those desires on the back burner for years. At this point, those ambitions have been reduced down to burnt, black coal, but put that coal under some flame and you got… hot creative fire? Doesn’t make much sense but I’m running with it.
For instance, I’ve been writing off and on for years and I’d love some time to dedicate to writing and see what I can come up with. A book or some sort of animated project are dreams of mine but I need the time to really focus on that. Also, I recently invested in equipment to learn how to paint digitally. This medium will aid me immensely with any concept art work and possibly lead to some collaborative work. But as I said, I need the time to learn and master these digital tools before I take that next step.

How in the living hell can I reformat the very fabric of time?

It’s a conundrum I’ve long been trying to solve, and I think I might’ve found the answer. Patreon. If you’re unfamiliar with Patreon, it’s essentially a patronage system, where you support a creative with monthly subscription payments. Like Kickstarter, there are a number of tiers and each tier affords you a different rewards and access to a certain level of posts.
Here’s a video that explains it better than I can:

Here's a link for those that can't see the embedded video. Patreon Video

I’ve already launched the page in preparation to this announcement and it explains my creative goals with Patreon in better detail. You can find it here: ANDY KEHOE PATREON

Not only will this help me in other creative endeavors, but having a more sustainable income will greatly help me with my original work. As amazing as this job is, one thing it isn’t is consistent and predictable. Art sales should never be the standard of success, but its an undeniable factor when it’s how you make your living. I can honestly say that I’ve never let sales influence the course of my work. I guess I’ve been pretty lucky in this regard, because I never really had to. My work grew and evolved but my fans and collectors took the journey with me and supported me though it all. But times are changing and when work doesn’t sell like it used to, doubt creeps in and that little buried voice on financial practicality starts to get a bit louder. Time to slap that voice back to its “shut up hole.”
I appreciate all my collectors more than I could possibly describe with my addled, semi-coherent brain. That being said, I’d prefer not to be in a position where the only thing separating me from financial ruin is dependency on collectors buying my original work. That’s not ideal for anyone involved. So that’s another huge reason that I’m turning to Patreon. Having a sense of financial independence would allow me to continue with my passion of creating without the fear of it all coming crashing down.

With my Patreon launch, I also get to announce the MULTIVERSAL CREATURE GUILD. When you support my Patreon page, you can access this esteemed secret Guild that will connect you to like minds from multiple universes.

More info on the Guild here: Multiversal Creature Guild Info

When you become e a member of the Guild you get a Welcome Kit including a Certificate of Membership, a Membership Card, and an Official Guild Hard Enamel Pin (to help you spot other Guild Creatures in the Human World.) I hope to see you among our ranks one day. Here are some pics of the Welcome kit items:

Wintery Hell Print Release 01.19.18

Hello everyone and late yet robust Happy New Year wishes to you all!

Hope all of you in the American North East are enduring this frozen hellscape as well as you can. I walked to the coffee shop today and felt like I was in The Road. But instead of contending with starvation, roving packs of cannibals, and the rapid deterioration of all humanity, I just had a freshly baked chocolate chip muffin and a piping hot americano. It was delightful. Suck it McCarthy!

Also, around 60 barges broke free on the Ohio River and are currently lodged against the Emsworth Locks and Dams right down the street from me. Many of them are loaded with cargo and a good number of them have tipped and submerged. And there's nothing they can do because it's insanely cold and everything is frozen and impossible.

Loose Barges

If I had one wish, it would be to meet Cormac McCarthy, Werner Herzog, and Terrence Malick at that snowy riverbank at dawn, and we could just gaze at this profound and enormous display of human folly in complete silence. Manmade industrial leviathans churning and fighting against the unrelenting forces of nature in a cacophonous struggle to avoid the inevitable, quiet end. All our grand aspirations succumbing to the oldest of fates and sinking into the cold darkness to lie amongst the countless number of discarded I.C. Light cans on the bed of the Ohio River. Then we all just nod to each other and walk back to our own separate lives.... Then Herzog circles around and meets at the coffee shop for fresh muffins, and he reads the first book of Harry Potter to me aloud in his Herzog voice.

PRINT NEWS!

I'll be releasing my first print of 2018 this Friday, January 19th, at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time in the Andy Kehoe Art Shop.

CYBER BLACK CAT MONDAY – 11.27.17

CyberBlackCatMONDAY-Ad-FLAT

The holidays are bearing down on us like 9 blackout drunk Santas driving a semi truck down an icy hill at 210 mph hauling a triple trailer filled to the brim with reindeer steaks and eggnog and they all forgot their prescription eye glasses at the Outback Steakhouse where they each consumed 6 blooming onions a piece. It's an unstoppable force of horror, merriment, over indulgence, and run-on sentences. So to get into the spirit of the inevitability of it all, I present: CYBER BLACK CAT MONDAY

Starting at midnight Eastern on Monday November 27th, everything and anything in Andy Kehoe Art Shop will be 20% for a week with the code:
CYBERBLACKCAT17
That includes all of the original work posted in my shop. Speaking of, I just added all of the available work from my recent Thinkspace Gallery show, PRISMATIC to my shop. Is that on sale? It most certainly is. How about all of my remaining Jonathan Levine Gallery pieces? You bet it is. Snazzy iridescent Metal prints? Hell yes. Custom framing? TOTALLY. Cure All Phoenix Tear Tonic? Unfortunately, that's a no. I had a guy, but he was recently mauled to death by a rabid manticore. If anyone has a connection on that, let me know.

All print orders in the US made before December 18th should definitely arrive before Christmas, and international orders should be made before December 8th to be safe. Though I can't fully guarantee any shipping times on international orders because once it leaves the States, it's all in Santa's velvety, white-gloved hands.
Many of my originals will be shipped by their respective galleries, so try to order those a couple weeks in advance.

Thanks for reading and a preemptive & hearty Happy Holidays to you all.
Andy

PRISMATIC OPENING

Hi Everyone!

This show really took it out of me, but I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. I'd talk about it more, but as it turns out, I've already spent hours writing about it in my recent interview with Sour Harvest. You can read the interview here:

Upcoming Show: PRISMATIC

PRISMATIC-Postcard

Happy to announce my upcoming show, PRISMATIC, which opens on September 30th, 2017 at Thinkspace Gallery. This will be my first time exhibiting in the LA area in 5 years, so I'm super excited to be back again. Here's the official statement for the show from the gallery:

Andy Kehoe’s work is compelling, haunting, and magnetic. He uses the suggestion of narrative to imply a trajectory beyond the image plane. The viewer is left feeling as though they have had a glimpse into a much longer, and more significant vignette. Just as all effective suggestions of narrative leave one feeling the absence of its absolute resolution, we feel a mesmerizing pull to Kehoe’s narrative fragments, and wonder what else lies beneath the surface.

The postcard image is the first piece I finished for the show called, Together in the Maelstrom. I've been wanting to make a spiritual followup to my piece, Together at the Threshold, for a while now. I made Together at the Threshold for my wife, Ash, for our engagement and it symbolized us at the precipice of our future journey together. This year, on August 25th, we celebrated our 5 year anniversary so it seemed like a fitting time to make the follow up. We've been through a lot together in these past 5 years so I wanted to convey the beauty of love and partnership, but also capture the frightening largeness of it. Giving yourself completely to another person, trusting in them, and resigning yourself to all the vulnerabilities that entail, is at once beautiful, comforting, fearsome, and a multitude of other emotions I can't begin to adequately express in words. Then externally, the world around us is both a grand and dreadful place, so having someone to share the experience is all the more comforting, exciting, and gratifying. But it also brings an extra level of fear and anxiety knowing that all the horrible things in life can affect the person you love and none of it is in your control. All you can do is take their hand and witness it together in all its awe and horror.

“Rarefied Splendor” Metal Print Release 08.02.17

Rarefied Splendor

Rarefied Splendor

After months of toiling and fiddling, I finally got a print made of, "Rarefied Splendor." Pretty excited about these! I'll be releasing them next Wednesday, August 2nd at 4:00 pm Eastern Time in my Shop.

The sky in the original painting was made by mixing iridescent and pearlescent pigment into the wet resin then painting on and around those patterns. So when it came to making prints of it, it didn't seem right to just print them on paper. After experimenting with some different papers, I decided to have them printed on aluminum through a process called dye-sublimation. They are printed on a clear coated aluminum sheet which allows the brighter colors in the print to reflect the metal and showcase some of that original iridescence. They are archival, scratch resistant, easily wipeable, and have a beautiful semi-gloss finish. So cool! I'll include some more info on the dye-sublimation process at the end of the post.

They are more pricey to produce though, so they'll be at a slightly higher price point of $175 unframed, and $225 framed. I worked with my framer to figure out a low-cost, framed and ready to hang option that looks clean and wonderful and is only $50 more. Since the prints are on metal, this also allows me to frame them with out glass which means that I can offer the framed versions to my international buyers as well. Hurray! Also, if you do end up buying an unframed metal print, I would recommend not using glass when you get it framed.

Here are the details:

And as promised, some info on dye-sublimation on Aluminum via Blazing Editions.

Sublimation onto metal is a new, cutting edge, way to reproduce an image. Sublimation itself is the process of going from a solid to a gas, back to a solid - skipping the liquid state.

The image is first printed onto a transfer paper and then is adhered to pretreated aluminum (other substrates such as tile, wood, or glass are also available).

The aluminum and transfer paper are placed into a custom heat press, which is heated to temperatures exceeding 380 degrees Fahrenheit. While being subjected to extreme heat and pressure, the dyes from the transfer paper turn into a gas, are pressed into the surface of the metal, and then solidify into the treated aluminum. As the dyes cool they are permanently infused beneath the surface of the metal substrate.
