Dawn of the Red Panda

Hello Everyone!

Last year was the first year I didn't complete a traditional painting in... decades. Wow that's kind of crazy. I'd already cut back on my art show work purposefully --as the art show circuit was grinding me to dust-- but then covid hit and all art shows came to a standstill. The art show world has since picked up again but nothing really came up for me last year. I've always wanted a place for my traditional painting in my workflow so I'm excited that I have multiple group shows lined up this year.

The first show is a group show called, Existential, which actually opened last week at Antler Gallery in Portland. Sorry for the late heads up! The last couple weeks have been chock full and I didn't have a moment to send out a Newsletter. Just got too much on my giant plate right now! It's a mostly good problem to have.

It's a show themed around endangered species so I went did what had to be done. I painted a red panda. Here's my piece entitled, "Champion of the Rare."

Champion of the Rare - Oil & Acrylic on Wood Panel - 2023

Felt really good to finish a painting. Looking forward to making more this year.

This piece is still available for purchase. There are also a lot of amazing artists with their amazing work in the show so do yourself a favor and check it out. You can find the work from the show here:

Spring Forward to the Groggy Lands

Hello Everyone!

It felt safe to welcome Spring early because this Winter has basically been Spring for weeks... then it snowed and got freezing. Winter got me with the long game. Good one.

This week has been a sluggish one because of the time change, which never seemed to affect me before. Guess my older self is more affected by these things now. Another fun wrinkle to aging. Between that and trying to figure out a way to keep out dog out of the cat litter room (he's apparently addicted to cat poop), it's been a slow, choppy week. I did manage to redo my portfolio website though, which I've been meaning to do for a while. I think it looks great. Check it out if you're feeling it. Also, my blog moved to this site so if you were subscribed to my old RSS feed, you'll have to update it.

Andy Kehoe Art Portfolio Site

Besides that I've been busy with my Patreon Digital Paintings. Here are the last two I did for 2022 and the first two I did for January and February this year:

October Digital Painting: Spell of Twilight States

Spell of Twilight States - 2022 - Digital Painting

This piece continued my Halloween season paintings. Really love how this turned out with the multiple vertical levels and lighting scenarios. Each sections has it's own vibe but it all works together. Here are some details:

Spell of Twilight States - Lower Detail
Spell of Twilight States - Upper Detail

Prints can be found here: Spell of Twilight States Print

November/December Digital Painting: Season of Subtle Bounds

Season of Subtle Bounds - 2022 - Digital Painting

Here's my winter themed piece for the year. Winter is a season of mixed emotions for me so the duality of this image really suits me. Joy and depression are uncomfortably close to each other during these months. I do love this character and the spirit cat.

Season of Subtle Bounds - Detail

Prints can be found here: Season of Subtle Bounds Print

January Digital Painting: March of the Exiled

March of the Exiled - 2023 - Digital Painting

For the piece in January, I decided to revisit an old painting titled, March of the Exiled. Here's the original painting from a solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in 2009.

March of the Exiled - 2009 - Oil & Acrylic on Wood Panel

It's one of my favorite paintings from that era. I decided that I'm going to kick off every year with a digital remake of an important painting from my past shows. It'll be interesting to see how I can adapt the old imagery with my current painting sensibilities. This one was super fun and it was awesome to revisit these old friends. You can find prints here:

February Digital Painting: Spirits of Forgotten Places

Spirits of Forgotten Places
Spirits of Forgotten Places - 2023 - Digital Painting

As I mentioned in my Patreon post about this painting, I really tried to go simple with this image since it was a short month, but I guess I just can't help myself. My dog loves cat poop and I love ridiculous details. I also really, really love painting dead trees. So much enjoyment. Plus I got to paint a ghost doodle.

Its a Mad World, Pet a Cat

Hello Subscribers!

I apologize for the lack of posts on this Blog/Newsletter but man is it hard when the world seems to be falling apart around us. Plus there are so many damn outlets to consider these days and I'm being pulled around like crazy. It can spread you thin, so to keep what's left of my sanity, I've had to focus on just a couple venues to get me through. Those have been my Patreon and Instagram. When all is chaos you gotta keep things simple. So if you aren't signed up for any of those, you can find them here:

Andy Kehoe Patreon

Andy Kehoe Instagram

Speaking of Patreon, I've been continuing my Digital Painting journey and this year has been great for me. Here are some samples from my Digital Painting posts on Patreon.

Together in the Maelstrom 2021 - I started the year with a digital remake of Together in the Maelstrom so that I could offer it as an open edition print. The original print edition sold out super fast and it was the most requested print I would get by a long shot. It resonated so deeply with people and I wished I had it available to share that image with everyone that wanted one. So the best solution for that was to make a new one and I love the way it turned out. Also, I'm on schedule to make the next progression in this series as my 10th year wedding anniversary is coming up next year, and after the last couple years we've had, its gonna be a doozy.
Face of the Ancient
Boon of the Deepest Light
Hope for the Lost
Those of the Unbounded

These are all available as prints in my shop. Click here to check it out: Andy Kehoe Art Shop

Art Show News:

I have a couple group shows coming up in the next couple weeks.

The first is the Vanguard show at Outré Gallery in Melbourne Australia.

The show was supposed to open on August, but Melbourne is under another lockdown due to a certain dickhead virus that won't get the hint. They were hoping to hold out a bit to see if it would lift, but with no clear signs of letting up, they decided to release the online preview on Monday and hope for the best. Hopefully people can go see these pieces in person before it comes down.

Click here to sign up for the online preview: Outré Gallery Vanguard Preview

Here's my piece for the show.

Braving the Hereafter - 16"x20" - Oil, Acrylic, Resin on Wood Panel

The next show is the 16th Annual BLAB! Show.

Always an absolute honor and pleasure to be involved with BLAB! and seriously, look at that lineup. Amazing to be among such great and accomplished artists.

I don't have a piece to share yet unfortunately. Things are not going smoothly with this particular painting. The painting itself is looking great... but unforeseen circumstances are hindering me from finishing it. The first being that my cat Gremmy got really sick and my wife and I have been dealing with that for the last several days. Poor little guy got a urinary block and that ain't great for a cat. So he's been in the emergency clinic, but good news is that he's home now but we're in full monitoring mode. Besides some shaved arms, a shaved chunk of fur in the middle of his tail, and a shaved butthole, he's looking pretty good.

Thank goodness he's recovering. Don't know what I'd do without my little buddy.

On top of that, my painting just won't dry so that I can do the final layer. When I start the finishing details and line work, I always put a thin layer of Galkyd on top of the whole piece because it gives me a nice smooth surface to work on. Put it on Tuesday... and its still tacky. Ugh. Why??? This never happens. Maybe the humidity? I was behind as it was with the all-hands-on-cat-deck crisis, and this exactly what I didn't need. Giving me heart palpitations. Just goes to show you, paintings can be a fist fight sometimes, no matter where you are in your career. The painting is currently sitting right in front of my window AC unit. Fingers crossed.

Print Shop News:

I'll be releasing my Outré piece, Braving the Hereafter, as a limited edition print next Friday. I'll be releasing it alongside another painting I did earlier this year called, Lost Reverie. They're both going to be small editions of 50 so get them while they're available. I'll send an update next week to remind you all.

Lost Reverie

Also, I post a digital painting every month (this month excluded due to craziness) and I release the prints at the same time so be sure to keep on eye on that. Again, the best place is my Patreon and Instagram.

And that should do it.

Take care and be safe out there!

Holiday Update 2020 & Outré Gallery Show

Hello Everyone! Wanted to prep you for the upcoming holidays and to share my new show with you.

Cyber Black Cat Monday: Pandemic Edition

Cyber Black Cat will warp into our existence again this holiday season, but due to the pandemic (which he had no part in), things will have to be a bit different this go around.

First, the sale will last 2 weeks instead of 1 week since Cyber Black Cat realizes there is a lot of madness going on in our world right now. The sale will be for 15% off anything and everything in the Shop using the code: CYBERBLACKCAT2020

Also, with international shipping being the way it is, I’ll be taking international orders until December 11th, then I'm going to ship all international orders together in batches. The first batch will go out December 4th and the last batch on December 15th. Since USPS is a disaster now, I’ll be holding on to all international orders received from now on and shipping all those orders via DHL for the holidays. You should get your print order with in a week via DHL which is excellent. Orders via USPS have taken around 4-8 weeks to be delivered. That's insane and its something I can't count on for holiday shipments this year. DHL is kind of a pain for single print orders though so I only ship orders in batches through them, hence me waiting until I get a bunch of orders in.

Lastly, I'll be releasing a few new prints from my recent show on Monday along with the announcement of the start Cyber Black Cat. It will be 2 larger prints and 2 smaller prints.

Holiday Cutoff Dates. Any orders received after these dates will be shipped after Christmas.
Domestic (USA): December 18th
International: December 11th

Art Show: The Unreal is Here

My latest show opened at Outré Gallery in Melbourne on Friday and here are the paintings I did. These are all oil & acrylic on wood panel.

Two Creatures Contemplate A Dying Star
Companions of Isolation
Couples Spirits of the Half Moon
Better Days
Wistful for Old Faces
Mind's Haven

To check availability of paintings, go here: The Unreal is Here Paintings

I also did a digital painting for the show to be released as an exclusive limited edition print on canvas. The print is approx 20" x 28"(50 x 73 cm) and is a limited edition of 75.

Aura of the Mystical

You can purchase the canvas prints here: Aura of the Mystical Prints

Thanks everyone and stay safe out there!

Holiday Update 2019

Son of a Krampus. Thanksgiving and the holiday season are upon us. How does this happen every year? One day there are inappropriately early Christmas decorations popping up and all of a sudden you're waking up on New Years day with a (hopefully) mild hangover, shaking confetti out of your hair, and wondering where the hell the last month and change went. As we helplessly drift towards the holiday black hole, there is but one hope to pull us from the maw of the jolly void... Cyber Black Cat

CyberBlackCat-Ad-2019-FLAT-Resize

Cyber Black Cat returns to our dimension on December 4th, bringing a week long sale at Andy Kehoe Shop. All items will be 15% off including prints, originals, and puzzles. **Guild Members get an additional %15 off on top of their Guild Discount**

He'll also be bringing a print release along with him. (Details below)

Speaking of prints, I recently released my newest Patreon digital painting as a print and it is available now.

Liminal Communion

Liminal Communion

Printing this particular piece was pretty tricky due to the subtleties in the dark tones and I kept losing a lot of the details in my first attempts. I really love this image so I wanted the print to be as good as possible. This lead me to explore some different paper types and I eventually landed on a Satin gloss paper. It worked like a charm and really picked up those tiny details. This is the first print of mine that is printed on something other than matte paper and I think it fits this image so well.

Art Show News

I have a small 12"x12" painting heading down to a Thinkspace Group Exhibition at Scope Miami Beach 2019 Art Fair which opens on December 3rd. As always, a ton of amazing artists involved so check the Thinkspace site for more info.

Thinkspace Scope Miami Beach

The show pieces won't be up on their site until December 3rd so be sure to check back to see all the work. Here's my piece for the show: (if you're interested in purchasing this, use the Thinkspace contact page)

There Is No End.jpg

There Is No End - Oil on Wood - 12"x12" - $800

As alluded to above, this small piece will be the print released on Cyber Black Cat Wednesday. I've been wanting to add another small print option and this seems like a solid choice. Here's the print release info:

Autumn Update 2019

Pumpkin-Smaller

Hello and Happy Fall everyone!

Throw on that cozy sweater, break out the boots, and heat up some cider because the first real chill of Fall has finally rolled in. Go on now Summer. Git! With Autumn comes all the familiar occurrences: vivid leaves falling in the breeze, wood fires burning, panicked squirrels burying nuts they'll forget about minutes later, and the smell of stale pumpkin spiced latte breath. Magical. I'm more into all the apple treats attributed to Fall though I did dig into a pumpkin roll pretty hard this week. Can't beat that cream cheese icing. Mmmmm. Wait, does anyone make an apple roll? I must investigate.

Art Show News:

I recently had a small 12"x12" piece hanging in the Thinkspace booth at Moniker Art Fair in London. Here's an image of the piece:

Trasnscender.jpg

Transcender - 12"x12" - Oil & Resin on Wood - SOLD

The piece has sold but I'm still considering making some prints. Having some more smaller print options never hurts. Consider the idea considered.

I also have an important update on my upcoming show at Red Truck Gallery in November... it's super cancelled and not happening anymore. Sorry for the bummer announcement. Seems like the ownership of Red Truck Gallery changed recently and things are a bit in flux. I was offered a chance to participate in an alternate version of the show at a new gallery but I decided to opt out. At this point in my career, I'm very hesitant to jump into anything uncertain and unestablished, especially when it comes to art shows and galleries. Or in the words of Roger Murtaugh:

too old

This was my actually response to the show offer and they luckily got, and appreciated, the Lethal Weapon reference.

I started a few pieces for this show which I'm going to put on the back burner for the time being and work on them at a less breakneck pace. I'll find somewhere else for them to go. The two 20"x24" pieces will almost certainly go to my next Outré Gallery show which will open next year in October. Super excited to get back to Australia! Much more on that show to come.

Print News:

My September Patreon digital painting was posted and a limited edition print for the piece is available now. Here's the image of the piece along with the print info:

I'm currently busy at work on my newest Patreon digital painting which (spoiler alert) will be very Halloween influenced. I've always wanted to make a Halloween inspired piece, so I'm super excited to have an opportunity with my Patreon work.

Thanks for reading!

Erratic Summer Update

Hello and Happy Summer everyone!

Last week was a record balmy scorcher that tried its best to melt my face and this week has been full of mild spring days... we've officially gone and broke the Earth. Until our inevitable catastrophic demise, here's some art to enjoy!

Omen Moon

Omen Moon - 07/2019

This piece is my Patreon digital painting for July. I really wanted to figure out how to create planets like I do with my paintings, specifically how it made planets with resin. With resin, I would throw a bunch of wet oil paint into the poured resin and go to town to create those swirly textures. I discovered a filter in Photoshop that allows me to do something very similar. Here's a link to a process video if you'd like to see it in action.

Making Planets in PhotoShop video

Really happy with how the planet turned out and super happy with the piece overall. Getting more and more comfortable with the digital medium and getting more able to evoke the mood I want. But digital work isn't all I'm working on these days, so here's a traditional painting update.

Art Show and Traditional Painting Update:

I'm working on a few pieces for an upcoming group show called, "Unto the Unreal" which opens on November 8th at Red Truck Gallery in New Orleans. I've been wanting to show with Red Truck for a while so I'm super pumped to finally get a chance to exhibit with them. I'll have at least 3 pieces in the show and I'll definitely be attending the opening. I can't pass on a chance to visit New Orleans.

Also, I decided that I'm going to start making a small oil painting a month for Patreon. I'm going to start with some 8"x10" panels and go from there. I'll be posting these for sale on Patreon first then they'll be available to everyone else a week later.

Panels ready for weird art

I also have a couple Thinkspace group shows coming up in the Fall. More on that to come.

Print News:

I'll be releasing the new digital piece as a limited edition print tomorrow, Friday July 26th at 4:00 PM Eastern time. As always, prints will be released through Andy Kehoe Art Shop.

Upcoming Art Show, The Witching Hour & New Print Releases

Upcoming Shows and Open Edition Prints

Hi Everyone!

I got a decent amount of info to unload which includes: upcoming art shows, a new Open Edition Print section in my Shop, and a big announcement on my art show plans for next year and onward.

Upcoming Art Shows

13th annual BLAB SHOW ad

First up, I'll be submitting a piece to the 13th Annual Blab! Show which opens on September 8th at Copro Gallery. As you can see from the flyer above, its a pretty stacked lineup and these shows are always amazing... and always an amazing honor to be involved in. I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my painting and will be releasing the image in the coming weeks.

Outre Show

I'm simultaneously painting a new body of work for my upcoming show at Outré Gallery which opens on October 19th in Melbourne, Australia. I'm planning on having at least 9 pieces for this show, and I'm also planning to attend the opening in Melbourne. Supposedly all Americans say "Melbourne" incorrectly so that's something I need to work on before I enter the country. Australia has been super amazing to me over the years and I'm super excited to visit for the first time and meet all you wonderful people on the other end of the world.

Art Shows Going Forward

With these 2 show announcements, comes another important announcement. This Outré Gallery show will be the last big art show that I do for a long while, and quite possibly might be the last big show that I ever do. I've decided to take a bit of an art show hiatus for many reasons and instead of talking your eyeballs out about it, you can check out this Patreon Post for a more detailed explanation.

In short, I cancelled all my shows next year, including my upcoming 2019 Jonathan LeVine Gallery show (which is crazy sad), and I don't plan on booking any more solo shows for the foreseeable future. That being said, I'm not giving up painting and I still plan on doing a couple group shows every year. I'm just not currently in a position where I can spend so much time, energy, and resources on a big show.

After these upcoming shows, I'll be shifting my focus to Patreon where I'll be diving head first into digital painting and print making. I've been wanting to get into screen printing for a long time and I have some big plans in the department. More on that to come. As of now, I have a lot to learn in both of those departments and will have a clearer picture of where I'm heading in the coming few months. I am excited though and I look forward to fully committing to these new endeavors.

Print News: Open Edition Prints

There are always pieces from shows that I really want to release as a print, but hesitate due to the risk and constrictions of a limited edition release. I also get requests for older pieces as prints but, again, hesitate for the same reasons above. So I just up and started an Open Edition section in my Shop where I can stop all this damn hesitating and offer those pieces as prints. Now you can buy them, or not buy them, since it's all super cool and mega casual. They are the same quality as my Limited Edition prints, printed on the same paper, are titled and signed, and since they are Open Edition, they are also less expensive. Seems like a good deal all around.

You can find the Open Edition section here: Andy Kehoe Art Shop Open Edition Prints

Here are some of the prints available as Open Edition.

Out of the Fog

Hi Everyone!

Out of the Fog

Last weekend, I dropped off my original painting, Out of the Fog, at Spoke Art NYC for the opening of the group exhibition, Suggestivism: Resonance. I really wanted to attend the opening to see some old friends again, to meet some new ones, sign some copies of the new, beautiful Suggestivism book that was just released, and to eat a slice of NYC pizza which I miss so, so dearly. I accomplished all of those things and had an awesome time. The show itself is amazing and I highly recommend you to check it out if you're in the NYC area. You can find more info here: Suggestivism: Resonance

As much as I wanted to attend the opening for all the reasons listed above, the main reason I had to attend was because my painting was insanely late and wasn't dry enough to ship. Driving it from Pittsburgh to NYC to hand deliver it to the gallery was the only viable option to get it there in time for the show. I've been working on this painting for a few months so why did a 16"x20" oil painting take me so long to complete? I wrote a rather long-winded and brutally honest exposition into my creative and mental challenges over the past 8 months, but I'm going to spare you from that... also, after rereading what I had written the next day, I closed it without saving it. I think the importance was just writing it and knowing it for myself.

In brief, I've been mired in an existential quagmire and I've been trying to climb out of it for the better part of a year. This painting was a symbolic first step for me to climb out of the miasma of crushing self-doubt that had enveloped me and to get back on solid, creative ground again. It was an important piece for me to finish, and even though it took to the very last conceivable moment, I finished it and jumped that first mental hurdle. Relief. I wanted the piece to speak to my experience, so I came up with this painting and this title, Out of the Fog. I felt like I was in a deep, dense haze, but I wasn't standing idle in it. I was journeying deep into it in, hoping to find something grand and meaningful within. Even though this piece is pretty small, it feels enormous to me in many ways.

I'll be releasing limited edition prints of this piece on Friday July 20th in my Shop at 4:00 PM Eastern time. Here are the details on the print.
